UNICORN is Horizon 2020 research and innovation project which aims to facilitate the design and deployment of cloud applications and services and improve developers’ productivity by reducing cloud application design time via code annotations and blueprints for security.

BioAssist will use the “HeartAround” homecare solution to validate the UNICORN platform. “HeartAround” provides innovative health monitoring and communication services which are built, deployed and operate using state-of-the-art cloud technologies; totally aligned with the UNICORN offering. The key functionalities provided by the application are the following: a) video communication between all platform users based on WebRTC technology, b) biosignal and activity monitoring by integrating a series of bluetooth enabled sensors and wearables (e.g. oximeters, blood pressure monitors, glucometers, weighing scales, spirometers, thermometers, urine analyzers, activity trackers, smartwatches), c) creation of a complete electronic health record of patients including medical test results, biosignals, allergies, medication etc.), d) reminders for medication adherence and measurements following a specific plan defined by healthcare professionals, e) notifications to carers and helpdesk for emergencies, and e) entertainment features such as multimedia sharing, and access to news and weather forecast. These functionalities are implemented in the client applications for the end-users (Android app, iOS app, web app, helpdesk web app) and are supported by a cloud-based backend which provide REST APIs for the client applications, data persistence and analytics.
